How to use quote requests effectively
How many tradie quotes should I get?+
Two to three. One quote is impossible to evaluate. More than four creates analysis paralysis and burns provider goodwill. The sweet spot is three — one local sole operator, one larger firm, one mid-range — to triangulate fair pricing.
Should I mention I have other quotes?+
Mention you're getting quotes; don't share specific numbers up front. Saying "I'm getting 3 quotes and want to compare scope" signals you're a serious buyer. Sharing the lowest number invites the new quote to anchor just below it without justifying scope.
What should a good quote request include?+
Service type, property size, suburb, timing, scope inclusions, and specific questions about materials, GST, licence, and insurance. Our generator above includes all of these by default — copy the output exactly and send to providers.
How long should I wait for a response?+
Reasonable: 24-48 hours for a written quote. If a tradie hasn't responded in 72 hours, they're too busy, too disorganised, or not interested in the job. Move on.
Is it OK to ask a tradie to match a lower quote?+
Yes, if the scope is identical. Frame it as "Can you match scope at that price?" not "Can you go cheaper?" — the former respects their expertise, the latter signals you're shopping on price alone. Many tradies will match if their scope was lighter, or explain why theirs is better value.
