Your Rights When the Bill Is Higher Than the Quote
Australian consumer law protects you.
Quote vs Estimate
A quote is a fixed price for defined scope — the tradie cannot charge more unless you agree to extra work in writing. An estimate is a rough guide and the final price can differ. Always ask: 'Is this a fixed quote or an estimate?' and get it in writing.
When can they charge more?
Only if: (1) you requested additional work, (2) unforeseen issues were discovered AND they told you about extra cost before proceeding AND you agreed. They cannot add charges without consent.
Bill higher than quote?
If it is a fixed quote with no agreed variations, you only need to pay the quoted amount. Contact the tradie in writing, reference the original quote, and state you will pay the agreed amount.
Unrequested extra work?
You are generally not obligated to pay for work you did not ask for. But if you watched them do it without objecting, it becomes harder to dispute. Always confirm additional costs before they proceed.
Deposits and payments
Under $1,000: pay on completion. Larger jobs: staged payments (10% deposit, 40% halfway, 50% completion) are normal. Never pay 100% upfront. Over 10-20% deposit is unusual for standard work.
Substandard work?
Under Australian Consumer Law, services must be provided with due care and skill. If defective, you have the right to have it fixed at no extra cost. Document everything with photos and written communication.
Where to get help
NSW Fair Trading, Consumer Affairs Victoria, Queensland Office of Fair Trading, or your state equivalent. Small Claims Tribunal for disputes under $10,000-$25,000 depending on state.
