LocationOfficial source
All statestraining.gov.au and Standards AustraliaThere is no national occupational licence for arborists, so “qualified” means a training qualification rather than a licence and you have to ask for it by name. For climbing, pruning and removal work ask for the Certificate III in Arboriculture; the current code is AHC30824, which replaced AHC30820 and is not equivalent to it. If you need a written tree report — for a development application, a council permit or a neighbour dispute — that is consulting work, and the qualification to ask for is the Diploma of Arboriculture, built around assessing trees and reporting on their health, defects and risk. Specify that pruning be performed to AS 4373 Pruning of amenity trees, the standard councils refer to, and ask separately for current public liability insurance, because nothing in the qualification system requires it.
All statesLocal councils, and Safe Work Australia for powerline workCheck with your council before you engage anyone: approval or a permit is commonly required to remove or significantly prune a tree, and there is no national tree-removal permit scheme. The control sits in local planning instruments and state vegetation legislation and genuinely differs council to council — species, trunk diameter, height and distance from the house all change the answer, and clearing without approval can attract substantial fines. If the tree is near overhead powerlines, do not assume a uniform national rule: Safe Work Australia sets out a zone-based approach but states that approach distances vary by state and territory and directs you to your electricity supply authority or electrical regulator. The innermost zone is a no-go zone requiring supply authority approval, and the adjacent zone may only be worked by an authorised person, assessed as competent and reassessed annually, with a safety observer — so get written confirmation that your arborist is authorised for the zone the work falls in, or that the network operator will attend.
