Home service costs by city
The model uses Sydney as a baseline, with assumed adjustments for other cities. These are not measured differences between local markets. Each city page explains what shapes prices locally and links to estimates for all 23 services.
Estimate or verified?
Here city prices are modelled estimates using existing guide assumptions, without a reconciled source dataset. An observed range is published only when its numbers are computed from at least 10 eligible submissions with matching scope, tax and materials treatment. Quotes and paid invoices are kept separate. Capital cities
Sydney
Model baseline: SydneyThe deepest pool of providers in the country, so three written quotes is a realistic ask rather than an imposition — and comparing three is the single best check on any one of them.

Melbourne
Model assumption: 8% below SydneyA large, competitive market spread over a wide area. Ask whether travel between suburbs is being charged; a provider coming across the city may add a call-out that a local one would not.

Brisbane
Model assumption: 15% below SydneyThe subtropical climate keeps pest and aircon work in demand year-round. Where the timing is yours to choose, booking outside the summer rush usually means more providers are available.

Perth
Model assumption: 18% below SydneyAircon is close to essential here, which concentrates installation and service work in the lead-up to summer. Ask about lead time before you ask about price if you are booking in that window.

Adelaide
Model assumption: 22% below SydneyA compact capital where most providers cover the whole metro area, so travel charges are less common. Confirm it either way — an unlisted call-out is one of the more frequent surprises on a final invoice.

Canberra
Model assumption: 7% below SydneyA small capital with a high share of ACT-licensed specialist trades. Check the licence class covers the specific work, not just the trade — the ACT's thresholds differ from those in surrounding NSW.

Hobart
Model assumption: 18% below SydneyA smaller market for specialist trades. Ask about lead time first: availability is more often the binding constraint here than price, and a long wait can change which quote is actually the better one.

Darwin
Model assumption: 12% below SydneyThe tropical climate makes aircon and pest control ongoing rather than occasional work. Ask what a service interval covers and whether callbacks within it are included.

Gold Coast
Model assumption: 17% below SydneySalt and humidity drive a steady load of exterior maintenance. For anything on the outside of the house, ask what the quote assumes about the current condition — that assumption is usually where a variation comes from.

Toowoomba
Model assumption: 22% below SydneyA strong local trade network, so getting several quotes is realistic. Worth confirming whether a provider is travelling up from Brisbane and whether that travel appears in the quote.

Ballarat
Model assumption: 16% below SydneyA sole-operator-heavy market, so ask explicitly whether a quote includes GST. A business under the registration threshold does not charge it, which is enough on its own to make two quotes look different.

Bendigo
Model assumption: 17% below SydneyLike Ballarat, many providers here are sole operators. Confirm GST treatment and whether materials are included before comparing two quotes side by side — those two differences account for most of the gap.

Townsville
Model assumption: 15% below SydneyCyclone season runs November to April, and roofing, gutter and storm-prep work concentrates around it. If the timing is yours, booking outside that window generally means more choice of provider.

Mackay
Model assumption: 8% below SydneyResource-sector work competes for the same trades, so residential availability moves with it. Ask about lead time, and confirm the quote is fixed rather than tied to whenever the job actually starts.

Albury-Wodonga
Model assumption: 20% below SydneyA cross-border twin city. Licensing and rate cards differ either side of the border, so it is worth getting quotes from both NSW and Victorian operators and comparing what each one includes.
